Black History Month and Wear Red Day

Black History Month and Wear Red Day

October was a fantastic month for our children at Parklands. They began by celebrating noteworthy figures from Black History.
Each year group chose someone different to learn about, with greater emphasis on black women in history this year.

RP leant about Harriet Tubman.
Rec leant about Laura Henry-Allain.
Year 1 leant about Rosa Parks.
Year 2 leant about Mary Seacole.
Year 3 leant about Nelson Mandela.
Year 4 leant about Marcus Rashford.
Year 5 leant about Mary Jackson, Katherine Johnson and Dorothy Vaughan.
Year 6 leant about Martin Luther King.

Children in KS1 also enjoyed listening to stories written by black authors.
Year 1 enjoyed ‘Look Up!’ by Nathan Bryon & Dapo Adeola and ‘My Dad is a Grizzly Bear’ by Swapna Haddow.
Year 2 were mesmerised by ‘The Proudest Blue’ written by Ibtihaj Muhammad and S.K. Ali and ‘Sulwe’ written by Lupita Nyong’o & Vashti Harrison.

We ended this half term with ‘Wear Red Day’.
Both children and staff came dressed in red to show racism the red card.
