Jo and Vicky helped us to define and understand what bullying is. “Bullying is when you purposefully and repeatedly hurt, humiliate or isolate someone else”. Through acting out scenes of physical and verbal bullying, including social exclusion, the children were able to see that often, acting as a bystander in a bullying situation, can be just as damaging as the bullying itself. Jo and Vicky explained to us that to become an upstander we should try to do 5 things: distract, diffuse, encourage, support and follow up. With the help of Jolita the superhero we learnt that ‘The Power of One’ refers to us as individuals as being the key factor in stopping and preventing bullying.
