Homework & Reading
In year 5 children are responsible for choosing and changing their own reading book from a wide selection in the classroom. Please take time to read with your child every day, sign and make a comment in their reading record. Just reading two or three pages each day will enable your child to make good progress in reading. If you have any questions or would like additional support please feel free to come in and have a chat. Please also ensure that your child has their book bag in school every day. We will send a piece of relevant homework and spellings to learn every Friday. This should be returned by the following Friday at the latest.
Learning in English and Maths
In English we cover the learning objectives set out in the new National Curriculum. This includes a full range of topics over the course of the year. Our non-fiction topics include recounts, explanation texts, instructions, newspaper reports, discussion texts, poetry and persuasive writing. Our fiction writing involves writing a range of narrative stories, such as: legends, descriptions, suspense and mystery and fiction from our literary heritage. In addition we will read a variety of texts as a whole class. Grammar learning is incorporated daily into our literacy lessons. In Mathematics we also follow the objectives set out by the National Curriculum. We will build lessons around promoting children’s problem solving, reasoning and fluency. Children will develop understanding of place value, approximation, estimation and rounding with numbers up to 1,000,000. Within addition, subtraction, multiplication and division the children will use both formal written methods and mental strategies to solve a range of calculations.
Other Curriculum Subjects
In the Autumn Term our Science topics will be Earth and space and forces. We will investigate how the Earth and planets move in relation to the sun and explain the movement of the Moon relative to the Earth. Children will work to understand forces including gravity, air resistance, water resistance and friction. In Design Technology children will design, make and evaluate a moving toy with an Earth and space theme. As part of our Geography curriculum we will be undertaking a comparative study of the UK and China. Linked to this is our History topic of The Shang Dynasty of Ancient China. In Art we will study the artists Andy Warhol and Henri Matisse and use their work to replicate the styles they used in our own work. In RE our focus in Autumn will be Islam, we will learn about traditions of the religion and important journeys made by influential Islamic people. Our PE coaches will develop the children’s skills within invasion, striking and fielding games and Gymnastics.
